Overview
Our clinical team continues to seek new knowledge to improve the diagnosis and treatment of people with kidney disease, hypertension, the need for dialysis, and kidney transplantation. Our physicians actively participate in educational programs and research for fellows, advanced practitioners, clinicians, and the community.
Resiliency in Dialysis Initiation (ReDI)
Research Study
The Resiliency In Dialysis Initiation (ReDI; pronounced “ready”) is a medical research study sponsored by the National Institute of Health (NIH) and National Institute of Aging (NIA). The purpose is to investigate older adults who initiate hemodialysis and to understand the reasons why some adults do well and why some do not do as well.
To be eligible for the research study, you must:
• Have kidney function (eGFR) ≤ 20 ml/min|1.73 m².
• Be expected to start dialysis in the future.
• Be age 55-years or older.
• Be able to walk without human assistance (a walking aid is “ok”).
• Be English speaking.

Fellowship Program
Our physicians provide weekly clinical supervision to fellows who evaluate and longitudinally manage ambulatory patients with wide-ranging renal issues in the Nephrology Continuity Clinic at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Additionally our Nephrologists mentor second and optional third year fellows to further develop and hone clinical, educational and research skills with an emphasis guided by the fellow’s career goals.
Residency Program
Our physicians participate weekly in the education and clinical supervision of MedStar Health’s Internal Medicine Residency Program at the Good Samaritan Hospital. Residents are assigned during their electives and receive both inpatient and ambulatory experiences. The physicians’ close supervision ensure residents are being trained properly and attaining the necessary clinical skills. Residents enhance their clinical and educational skills through 1:1 clinical oversight and development and educational instruction.
Research Program
Dr. Bernard Jaar oversees MedStar Health’s North residency research activity as the Director of Research. This includes internal projects at the MedStar North Hospitals and external projects at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Bloomberg School of Public Health and the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Under the guidance of Dr. Jaar, residents receive regular didactics and targeted mentoring to further their research efforts.
